Obituary of Alden Vern Hill

Obituary On the morning of January 20, 2022, Alden Vern Hill passed away in his Fort Collins, Colorado home. If you were to ask Alden about himself, he would tell you the facts. He would tell you that he was born on August 4, 1937, at the Larimer County Hospital; that his parents were Alden T. Hill and Gladys Carlson; that he graduated from Fort Collins High School, Colorado State University, and Denver University Law School; that he married Janice Lillian Brandenburg in June of 1959, and had three children—Alden William, Christina Louise, and Brett Michael; that he began practicing law in 1963 in his Dad’s practice which eventually became the Hill & Hill Law Firm. He wouldn’t boast. He wouldn’t tell you that he was a distinguished military graduate, that he served in the United States Army, that he was admitted to the Order of St. Ives because of his exceptional law school grades, that he founded the Northern Colorado chapter of Inns of Court, that he was Vice Chair of the Colorado Bar Association Trial Lawyers, that he was Vice Chair of the American Bar Association, or that he’d argued successfully before the Colorado Supreme Court, and had been admitted to the US District Court, District of Colorado, US Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit Court, and US Supreme Court. Alden never wanted to talk about himself. He preferred to spend his time helping others with the law, playing, watching, and talking about golf or CSU football, reading, or doting on his dogs. Some days he could be found in his living room, attempting to accomplish all four. If you asked Alden the right questions, you might find yourself on a driving tour of the family farm in Timnath, eating lunch at the Stakeout Saloon, hitting golf balls at Fort Collins Country Club, taking a tour of the new Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at CSU, or discussing the seasonal variations of the watershed in Northern Colorado. Without a doubt, Alden would describe himself as a typical lawyer. But he wasn’t a typical lawyer. He truly cared about his clients, co-workers, and employees. Every year at Christmas, it was his tradition to hand-deliver poinsettias to neighbors, clients, staff, and family. His sly sense of humor was atypical of a lawyer and was most appreciated by those who knew him best. And that’s how he will be remembered. Alden is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Lillian, and is survived by their three children, Alden (Tammy), Christina (Kevin), and Brett, his sister, Ann, eleven grandchildren, Keegan (Rachel), Evan (Hannah), Garrett (Anna), Christian (Allie), Miranda (Cody), Aaron, Grace, Abby, Joshua, Gladys, and Annie, four great-grandchildren, Grayson, Oakley, Lillian, Elora, and another great grandson on the way this week, plus a Golden Retriever, Bear, and 2 Shetland Sheepdogs, Fritz and Memphis. A celebration of Alden’s life will take place at Noon on February 2nd (Wednesday) at First Presbyterian Church (531 S College Avenue, Fort Collins, CO, 80524) followed by a reception. A private burial will follow at Grand View Cemetery.
